How to reach Langkawi??

Langkawi Island can be reached by air or by sea. AirAsia is the cheapest while Malaysian Airlines is a bit expensive if you are in Kuala Lumpur and want to travel by air.

By Air: Less than an hour or about 50 minutes by plane. We took AirAsia which cost around Rs.48.

By Sea: If you are in Kuala Lumpur and want to start from here, you can take the ETS KTM train from KL Sentral to Arau. The train takes about 5 hours to reach Arau with a fare of RM 76 for adults and RM 42 for children. From Arau, get to Kuala Perls by taxi, which costs around RM25. The ferry departs every hour and costs RM 18 for adults and RM 13 for children.

We arrived in Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur by flight with AirAsia which cost around RM. It was a pretty time saver and cheap.

Penang to Langkawi Ferry

Ferries from Penang to Langkawi are a reasonable, stress-free and fast way to travel between the two islands. Nowadays, there are only two ferries per day on each route. Therefore, advance booking is highly recommended.

The ferry service between Penang and Langkawi departs from Swettenham Pier Penang and takes approximately 2.5 hours.

Here is the schedule or timetable:

Penang to Langkawi (Koh Jetty)

The first ferry leaves Penang at 8:30am and arrives in Langkawi at 11:15am.

The second ferry departs at 14:00 in the afternoon and arrives in Langkawi at 16:45.

Langkawi (Kuala Jetty) to Penang

The first ferry leaves Langkawi at 10:30 AM and arrives in Penang at 13:15 PM.

The second ferry departs Langkawi at 15:00 and arrives Langkawi at 17:45.

The ferry takes 2 hours 45 minutes. Sometimes it takes 2 ½ hours or 3 hours depending on sea conditions.

This ferry ride is the fastest way to get from Penang to Langkawi. In flight comparison, AirAsia flight takes 40 minutes to fly from Penang to Langkawi. And if you include check-in time, security checking, and travel to the airport, there may not be much difference between a flight and a ferry.


The one-way ferry ticket price from Penang to Langkawi is as follows:

Bring something warm to wear as these ferries are air-conditioned and the temperature is often very low. There is an entertainment system on board but not worth watching. Bring your own earplugs and entertainment.

How to get around Langkawi?

There is no public transport on Langkawi Island, as mentioned earlier in this blog. You can rent a bicycle, or motorbike, or hire a private taxi/Grab/Uber etc when you reach Langkawi. There are three main means of transportation:

Cycle: Rent a bicycle to explore the rare beauty of the island on a bicycle. Bicycles are cheaper at RM12 a day.

Taxi: The primary mode of transport in Langkawi is the taxi. Before hiring a taxi, taxi fares are often fixed.

Cars/Motorbikes: Renting a car or motorbike is the best way to explore the island. The island is mostly desert so you can easily drive for kilometers without seeing another car except in the areas of Koh Town and Pantai Senang.
